The Dreaming Dane Catering

Here at the Dreaming Dane, we believe that feeding people is more than just putting food on their plates. It's a privilege.

Step by step…….

A pebble, dropping into a pond creates ripples.

It is a subtle but amazing concept.
Up until yesterday..I had forgotten this…or better, I had forgotten to apply this to my life. I just trudge along, nose to the grindatone, working and sleeping and working and sleeping.
Sometimes getting quite frustrated by it all. Frustrated that I am not, to my mind, seeing any results. Just work, for works sake.
I forget that these working days, are like my pebbles.
I do a job…toss a pebble.
Talk with a potential client…toss another pebble.
It is all ground work for something I am building…something bigger.
So that makes it easier for me to put shoulder to the grindstone…knowing that someday these “pebbles” will create the Dream.

…The Dream..it haunts

I really want to open a cafe.

Today I had tea with my friend Queen Buzzy.  Not only is she a dear friend, but she is an amazing business woman, (Queen of The Random Job)  She is a published author (I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To), an amazing public speaker, and just an all around phenom!  I am lucky to have her as a friend.  But, the one thing that is challenging about my friend is that she can see straight through my B.S.  She asks questions and points out obvious things.  No one else does that for me.  Of course she  says, “But sweetie..” first, and then she goes for the vein…”get off your a**”.

I actually appreciate it.  Because I can get lost in the dream and forget to press forward!!!

So today with my friend I looked at property, researched funding and made a phone call to a landlord of an interesting cafe location.

That’s just one day with my friend Buzzy!

Fauntleroy Food Festival

Meghan and I are sitting at Endolyn Joe’s after service.  We are sipping beers and eating, and discussing the evenings event.  The Fauntleroy Food Festival is so much fun.  This is our second year attending and serving some of our favorite food.  This year was our famous Smoked Salmon Chowder with a pesto crusted baguette, and of course the Chocolate Cheesecake.  We are always impressed by how happy and friendly everyone is.  As I start on my second pint of Big Al Amber, my brains starts into cafe mode again. If I could fill the cafe with these happy friendly people, many of tonights guests promised to come to the cafe just to eat the Chowder, that would be The Dream come true!

Thanks again commitee members! I hope you invite us back next year!!!

Back of House

Before the front of the business can get busy, there is much work to do behind the scenes.  This first quarter of 2011, I’ll be focussing on advertising and business networking.

I attended my first (ever) BNI meeting.  A gathering of small business owners in the West Seattle area.  Coming together to support each other and to refer and promote eachother.  I have one more group to visit, then I will choose one to join.

Never one to wait in the wings, Meghen, the other half of The Dreaming Dane, has been baking for AJ’s Coffee over on Vashon Island.  They love everything she bakes for them (of course) and I know she will continue to do really well.  She is already, after about a month of baking, started to talk about expanding her menu for them. Next time you are on the island, check out AJ’s.

Look for us next at The Fauntleroy Food Festival.  We did this last year, and had a ball! It is a great opportunity to meet more contacts and get more people to eat our food! Rumor says we will be making smoked salmon chowder and there will be a chocolate cheesecake wedding cake there!!

I thought keeping up with this Blog would be easy!!!

It is so not!!

But I want to assure you, that I love it, even if it isn’t easy!

Some exciting things are happening! Or have already happened!

I was the guest speaker at The Highland Park Improvement Club’s Spotlight on Small Business.

It was fun! I was able to meet a lot of people and get the word out about holiday baking sales and orders coming up!

I am also getting ready to teach my very first “Official” cooking class.

Ravioli!  The class isn’t quite full yet, if you would like to join us, send me an email!

More coming, with Holiday Bazaars and such! There will be a lot of baking going on soon!

Get your orders in early, and don’t forget to give me 2 weeks notice.  Everything is baked fresh for you!!!!

Busy Weekend Coming Up!

This Saturday The Dreaming Dane will be catering two events…at the same time!!?  How you ask will I be in two places at once?  Good question!!!!

What some of you may not know is that there is a second half (so to speak) to the Dane…her name is Meghen!!! She is my business partner.  She will be taking half of our crew with her for a private dinner for 20 people…a tasting menu, of lovely bites and chocolate cake.  I will take the other half, plus a newbie, and we will tackle a wedding reception for 80…heavy appetizers.

We are very excited and feel very “grown up”!

I will post pictures and let you know how it all went!!

Wish us luck!!!

Higland Park Farmers Market

A dream I have had for a long time is to set up a booth at a local farmer’s market.

When I was young my family used to sell “stuff” at local swap meets, Clampet style. It was so much fun, meeting people and seeing all of the treasures.  I grew up believing that one mans junk truly is another mans treasure.

But I wanted my Farmer’s Market booth to be full of flowers and herbs and hand made cheese from my own goats and other beautifully crafted, home spun goodies.

I don’t have a chevre making farm (yet). But I do have the Dreaming Dane!!!

So last weekend, at the first ever Highland Park Farmers Market, I threw out my table and offered some samples!

I have The Dreaming Dane Panna Forte and our “soon to be” famous smoked salmon!!!

The best thing about the day, was meeting all of my neighbors!

I love meeting new people.  Some, I have spoken with on the phone, but  have never seen their faces!

A strong sense of community is important to me.

I hope to get to know more and more of the neighborhood “Peeps”!

Meanwhile, check out Nic’s Corner for some photo’s (he is practicing) and next Sunday (after the 4th) come on down to Highland Park for some meeting and greeting! And some goodies too!!!
